Save Our Story

A Note from the Chair of Trustees

The Wokesworth Heritage Centre is a "little gem" at the heart of our historic market town; a space where geology, industry, and artisanal fermentation meet. However, as many of you have noticed through the triple-glazed hand crafted Georgian sash windows of St Joan Street, we are currently facing a "Pivotal Resilience Challenge".

While the town's character has been shaped by mining lead ore and quarrying limestone for countless generations, our current character is being shaped by a £116,000 "operational deficit" and a Global Building Management System that has become sentient and decided that heating the gallery is "non-essential to the carbon-neutral mission statement."

The Woolley Legacy

Woolley is not just a White Woolly Mammoth (they/them); they are a stakeholder in our collective future.

Woolley was discovered in The Boney Hole (also known as Dream Cave, or Money Pit) by a Quarryman and a Pioneering Artisan Barista (with project management skills and a trust fund) on the 22nd of April 1822.

It was "the last time any of that lot did any real work" according to a descendant of the Quarryman.

Woolley represents the "Quirky, Different, Special" spirit of Wokesworth. We cannot allow this "White Elephant" or rather, White Mammoth to be "struck off" due to a mere lack of liquidity.

How You Can Facilitate Our Resilience

Stakeholder Working Party: We are inviting local residents to join a committee to discuss the 'Visionary Re-contextualisation' of our debt. We need people who can talk for three hours about a 'sustainable framework' without mentioning the bank balance once.
The 'Invisibles' Fund: We have thirty-two dedicated team members currently providing an 'Internal-Facing Heritage Experience.' Your donations ensure they can continue to re-catalogue the collection in a building that is technically closed to the public for safety and 'synergy' reasons.
The Capital Liquidity Appeal: We are seeking £116,000 to fund a "Forensic Impact Study" into why our award-winning, National Virtue Signal Lottery Heritage Fund-funded renovation didn't naturally generate its own gravity-fed income.

Work With Us — Strategic Vacancies

We are currently ramping up our campaign and invite applications for the following "Pivotal" roles:

1. Lead Architect of Existential Resilience

To design conceptual museum spaces that exist entirely within a grant application, removing the carbon footprint of actual visitors.

2. Sourdough Synergy Liaison (£45k Pro-Rata)

To ensure the artisanal bubbles in The Intersectional Bean are fully aligned with the building's Grade II* listed aspirations and the Trustees' dietary requirements.

3. Head of Grant-Induced Euphoria

To maintain a high-vibration environment where we celebrate 'Successful Submissions' so loudly that the 'Proposal to Strike Off' notices are drowned out.

Voices from Our Stakeholder Ecosystem

"Before the Heritage Centre, I had no idea what a 'place-based intersectional narrative' was. Now I use the phrase at least nine times a day and my marriage is over, but my LinkedIn engagement is through the roof."

Tarquin Feltham-Broadside, Heritage Feelings Consultant

"I came to see a mammoth skeleton and left with a holistic understanding of my complicity in the extractive limestone economy. Woolley didn't judge me. The gift shop volunteer did, but Woolley didn't."

Jemima Quince-Harrogate, Visiting Mindfulness Auditor

"I've been a volunteer here for thirty-seven years and I still don't have a key to the building. But I do have a lanyard and an 'Emotional Stakeholder' badge, and honestly that's worth more than access."

Our Commitment to Radical Carbon Accountability

At Wokesworth Heritage Centre, we believe that heritage should leave no footprint — metaphorical, ecological, or financial (especially financial).

We are proud to announce our "Net-Negative Existence Protocol", a pioneering framework in which the Centre offsets more carbon than it produces by the simple mechanism of being closed most of the time.

Zero-Emission Visitor Experience: By maintaining an average footfall of 4.2 visitors per week (three of whom are lost tourists looking for the car park), we have reduced our per-capita emissions to levels not seen since the Pleistocene era — coincidentally, Woolley's heyday.
Artisanal Heating Reduction: The Global Building Management System's refusal to heat the gallery has been rebranded as our "Ambient Authenticity Initiative", recreating the Ice Age conditions in which Woolley originally thrived. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own blankets as a form of "participatory thermoregulation."
Carbon-Conscious Gift Shop: All merchandise is now locally foraged, hand-felted, and priced at a level that ensures almost nobody buys anything, thereby eliminating supply chain emissions entirely.

Measurable Community Impact Outcomes

We commissioned an independent "Vibrational Impact Assessment" (cost: £38,000 from the operational budget) which revealed the following transformational metrics:

Social Cohesion Index: Up 340% since the introduction of our 'Contemplative Queuing Experience' — a two-hour wait for the café that allows strangers to form deep, trauma-informed bonds over the shared experience of not being served.
Heritage Awareness Uplift: 97% of surveyed residents now recognise the word 'Woolley.' (3% believed it to be a type of artisanal cheese, which we are counting as a win.)
Youth Engagement: Our 'Mammoth Feelings Workshop' for local schools was attended by fourteen children, seven parents, and one therapy dog. The dog has since been appointed to the Advisory Board.
Economic Ripple Effect: The Intersectional Bean café has generated an estimated £2,400 in annual revenue, almost entirely from trustees buying their own flat whites at meetings about the café's lack of revenue.

Equity, Diversity & Mammoth Inclusion Statement

Wokesworth Heritage Centre is committed to being the most inclusive heritage space in the Derbyshire Dales, if not the known universe.

We recognise that Woolley (they/them) was a neurodivergent megafauna of the Global Majority who navigated a hostile climate without access to mentoring, Wi-Fi, or a proper HR department. Their story is everyone's story.

Our Inclusion Charter guarantees:

Decolonised Labelling: All exhibit descriptions have been reviewed by a panel of seventeen sensitivity readers. The phrase "Ice Age" has been replaced with "Period of Involuntary Thermal Transition" to avoid triggering cold-averse visitors.
Accessible Jargon: Our information boards are available in Plain English, Academic English, Grant Application English, and Emoji. A British Sign Language version is pending a further £14,000 in funding we do not have.
Safe Space Policy: The Heritage Centre is a designated Safe Space for all visitors, volunteers, and mammoth remains. Any disagreement with the Trustees' vision will be addressed through our "Restorative Dialogue Protocol" (previously known as "being asked to leave").

Partnership & Sponsorship Opportunities

We are delighted to offer a range of "Collaborative Resonance Tiers" for businesses, organisations, and wealthy individuals who wish to align their brand with a heritage institution that is technically still operational.

🦣 Bronze Tusk£250/year

Your logo on our website (currently averaging 11 unique visitors per month, 9 of whom are the web developer checking if it's still up). Includes one complimentary flat white at The Intersectional Bean (oat milk surcharge applies).

🦣 Silver Tusk£1,000/year

Everything in Bronze, plus naming rights to one display cabinet of your choice. Current options include 'Cabinet of Miscellaneous Rocks' and 'Cabinet We Haven't Opened Since 2019.'

🦣 Gold Tusk£5,000/year

Everything in Silver, plus a seat on the Stakeholder Working Party, where you will be invited to attend monthly three-hour meetings that begin with a 'grounding exercise' and end with no decisions being made.

🦣 Platinum Mammoth£25,000/year

Full 'Visionary Partner' status. You may name a room after yourself (subject to planning permission, heritage consent, and a six-month consultation with the community about whether naming things is inherently exclusionary). Includes a personal tour with the Chair of Trustees and a signed photograph of Woolley.

All sponsorship income will be ring-fenced for the Mammoth Resilience Fund and absolutely not spent on another Forensic Impact Study. Probably.

Don't let the "Perfect Storm" extinguish our story.
Pay once, come back free for a year (subject to the building actually being open).
